Starbucks Announces New Rules for Customers
Starbucks has introduced new guidelines to make its cafes more welcoming to paying customers. Starting January 27, customers will need to make a purchase and follow a new code of conduct if they wish to use the restrooms or sit in the cafe.
Prohibited Activities and Behavior
The new rules will ban outside alcohol, smoking, and vaping in all Starbucks cafes. The company also aims to prevent harassment, panhandling, and discrimination. If anyone refuses to follow the new rules, baristas are instructed to ask them to leave and contact the police if necessary.
New Code of Conduct for Customers
A statement from the company explained, “We want to make sure our spaces are for customers.” The new “Coffeehouse Code of Conduct” clarifies that the cafes, patios, and restrooms are for paying customers only. This code will be displayed in stores to remind customers about maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
Changes in Free Water Policy
According to a Wall Street Journal report, free water will now only be available to customers and their companions. Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson said, “We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable. By setting clear expectations, we can create a better environment for everyone.”
Background of the Open-Door Policy
These changes follow Starbucks’ open-door policy, which started in 2018 after a controversial incident at a Philadelphia store. Two men were arrested for sitting without making a purchase, which sparked public outcry. Since then, some customers have raised complaints about long bathroom waits and inappropriate behavior.
Store Closures and Safety Concerns
In 2022, Starbucks closed 16 stores across North America due to safety concerns, including threats to staff and drug use in the stores.
CEO Brian Niccol’s Efforts to Improve Starbucks
Brian Niccol, who became CEO of Starbucks in August 2023, has been working to improve the company’s performance. He said, “I’m excited about the potential to grow and enhance the Starbucks experience while staying true to our values.”
Price Increase Pause and Transparency
Niccol had also promised to pause any price hikes for the remainder of the fiscal year. He explained, “We’re pausing price increases for this year and want to make pricing clearer in the app, especially when customizing orders.”
