Bubba Wallace’s Secret to Success: Racing, Family, and Michael Jordan’s Texts

Bubba Wallace Shines at Cook Out 400

NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace is happy after doing well at the Cook Out 400 race at Martinsville Speedway. He drives the No. 23 car for 23XI Racing, a team owned by NBA star Michael Jordan and racer Denny Hamlin. On Monday, Bubba Wallace spoke on CBS Mornings about his good form and how his life is changing, both in racing and at home. He feels confident as the season moves forward.

Family Comes First

Bubba Wallace became a father six months ago when his son, Beckett, was born. He says this has changed how he sees life. “Now, nothing is more important than being a good father, husband, and family man,” he said. “Before, racing was everything, and I missed out on many moments. I also stressed myself and others. Having a kid made me see there’s more to life than just racing.”

He also thanked his wife, Amanda, for managing everything at home. “My wife is superb,” he said. “The last six months were tough for her, and I don’t even know all she goes through. She’s the real star.” When asked what scares him, Wallace laughed and said it’s not fast cars or space—it’s spiders and the dark. “Now, with our son, we keep the door open and the hallway light on at night.”

Racing Still Thrills Him

Even though Wallace seems sure of himself, he admitted he sometimes feels nervous. “In the last few weeks, I’ve been anxious during practice, qualifying, and races,” he said. “But we got third place two weeks in a row, so I hope this continues.” He’s been with 23XI Racing since it started in 2021 and is an important part of the team. He loves racing, even though the NASCAR season is long and hard. “Our sport asks a lot, so you need to enjoy it,” he said. “The season is long, and our first break is in two weeks. It’s our only off-weekend.”

At Martinsville, his car hit speeds of around 110 miles per hour. For a pro driver, that’s normal, but it’s still fast. He joked, “Traffic here is like driving in New York—just weaving in and out. But we don’t use horns.” Bubba Wallace also talks to Michael Jordan often. “We chat a few times a week, and he always texts before and after races,” he said. “He watches every race, whether we win or lose, and he’s always there for us.”
