Georgia Senator Arrested for Attempting to Attend State Address

A Georgia senator, Colton Moore, was arrested on Thursday after attempting to attend Governor Brian Kemp’s State of the State address. Moore, who had been banned from the Georgia House floor, made this attempt to enter the House chamber where the governor delivers his annual speech.

Ban from the House Floor

The ban was imposed on Moore after he publicly criticized the late House Speaker, David Ralston, calling him “one of the most corrupt Georgia leaders we’ll ever see in our lifetime.” Following these remarks, House Speaker Jon Burns announced that Moore would be barred from the House chambers. According to a doorkeeper, this was the first time a senator had ever been banned from the floor.

Controversial Remarks About Ralston

Moore made these comments during a Senate debate on a resolution that sought to honor Ralston by naming a building at the University of North Georgia after him. The remarks were highly critical of Ralston’s leadership, accusing him of delaying judicial cases involving suspected criminals.

Suspension from Party Caucus

In September 2023, after Moore called for a special session to review DA Fani Willis’ investigation into Donald Trump, he was suspended from his party’s caucus. Georgia Senate Republicans declared that Moore would not be allowed to participate in any future caucus meetings due to violations of the caucus rules during his efforts to investigate Willis.
